I wanted to chime into this thread to share that I received my replacement drum and successfully replaced the drum on my R2. It was a great improvement for me. Though I hear occasional knocking (especially with larger batches of large seeds i.e. Pacamara) I haven’t had any issued with the drum opening since season roast #3.
I did have a little trouble with the disassembly and assembly following the video, but there were minor moments while following along. A few times I replayed sections and froze frames and eventually got it figured out. It wasn’t 100% accurate to my R2, maybe 95%.
The biggest challenge in my case was the shims. The shims were factory installed with the sharp edge away from the bearings, so I corrected that as instructed. I had to play with the count of shims front and back in order to find a sweet spot with the drum so that it wasn’t rubbing the front plate. I believe I ended up with no extra shims on the back and 4 on the front and finally was able to achieve what I needed.
I hope this is helpful.
I had two similar issues with drum noises on my R2.
The first issue was more of a general click, click around the bearing after roasting 3-4 roasts at 750g. It tended to go away after cooldown and starting up another day.
The second issue (more of a “clunk, clunk, grind”) came after ~23,000 kg of beans roasted when in the cooldown mode. This noise concerned me more as I didn’t like the grinding sound.
I performed general maintenance/cleaning particularly on the exhaust fan impeller. I did notice that the fan blades had general build up that was easy to clean w/ baking soda and hot water. I also cleaned the chaff fitter and screen. The noises went away after IBTS, Hopper cleaning and back fan/chaff hopper cleaning. I performed three 750g roasts after that with no issues.
To that end, I would like to make a request to add a “Service Maintenance Performed” + option to the daily calendar to indicate when the last maintenance was done. It’s helpful when going back and looking at total roasts by day/month and being able to do a look up for “Service/Maintenance notes” vs. having to rely on a notepad.
Love the roaster, ease of servicing! G.
