I would like to suggest a longer preheating at lower temperatures. I am roasting outside at 1C and the first roast is always spoilt.

This is extremely cold and could lead to even bigger problems such as excessive condensation.
Of cause can you always add some more minutes after the roaster indicates being ready for charging, however these low temperatures are certainly a challenge IMHO.
