Commedy of errors

I had some roasting problems that turned out to be because I didn’t know to install the induction update when I installed 79 FW for the controller. So I had thought well maybe I should clean the Infrared bean sensor. In the process of cleaning it after reassembly I discovered some washers in the cooling pan that I was setting parts in. The cooling pan was in its location for catching beans. Were these something that fell out that had been on the drum shaft…that bearing fell off the shaft at one while working on cleaning…not intentionally but none the case something that I had to put back on the shaft. I installed the shaft so the shaft rests in the bearing and bearing sits in the panel that was removed to clean the infrared sensor. (I have only roasted about maybe 10 roasts) since owning the machine. I cleaned it only because I didn’t know what else to try…but as I said my negative experiences with the R2 were because I hadn’t upgraded the induction software.
Then with the upgrades installed I decided to do a roast with the roast time app installed a first for me. Everything seemed just fine. Then the drum made a noise at about 10 min and I discover it was jamming!..going click click click… the roast was at its 2nd crack then. Then the drum would break free and stick again. This happened about four times until I discovered I could apply pressure to the shaft with the end of a wood spoon I use to stir cooling beans. Wouldn’t you know that wasn’t the end of my problems…to compound the problem the PRS button didn’t work. I couldn’t end the roast. I had to dump the beans 500g and kept trying to get any of the buttons to respond…Nothing!. So I turned the power of for a second or two then back on and this restored my control to initiate cooling of the beans and the machine. I think I saw 227c as the highest temperature but I am not sure about that. All the while the machine was cooling I had to be ready to press on the shaft to keep it free from jamming periodically. What a bummer! I do not know what the problem is. Were those washed on the drum shaft or what?

1 hr later
Thinking about those washers…maybe they are spacers that go in front of the bearing on the end of the shaft. These might keep the shaft from shifting forward and causing the drum to jam

Yes, most likely those are the shims which push the drum backwards so it does not jam when getting hot.

In addition to your support aillio contacted me and pretty much said the same thing. They want to call me on the 10th at 9 PM my time. I’m usually in bed by that time, oh well.

Yes its a shim problem now. I will have to have it disassembled when they call. I have a pretty good idea where the shims go but nothing I have found yet that describes just where they go. Then too i have read Aillio’s sales pitch and it mentions they have different thicknesses. That leaves me guessing what combination of shives and how many to use.

How I got in this predicament. The shims fell out over the cooling bowel where I had the tool kit set. It was when I had finished reassembling that I discovered the shims in the bowel under the tool kit. I opened the tool kit and there is a plastic envelope with a shim or two inside it. I assumed that these (washers) / shims fell out of the plastic envelope. ALERT they are shims and critical. NEWS TO ME

Aillio reached out on whatsapp to me and explained how the shims get mounted in the R2. I have restored the assembly with these shims using 3 that had tell tail residue. Aillio couldn’t say exact how many shims their factory might have installed. The three shims with residue were the only ones I determined must have been the originals. I did a 500g roast and the R2 ran without a hitch.
