My overhead exhaust hood starting making a serious noise at high speeds after 390 medium to light roasts, I decided to take apart the encased blower unit and discovered a complete caking of coffee dust clogging the air flow of the blower blades. After a complete cleaning it is back to working properly. The exhaust uses baffle type filters which evidently don’t collect all the particles flowing out of the Bullet during roasting. I will have to add this cleaning task to my maintenance schedule.
++ I’ve been using very minimal filtration ahead of my extractor fan, and it helps a lot. Need to change it every 10 roasts or so, but it’s made a big difference in the cleanliness of the fan components.
I’m just using a cheap MERV-1 filter that I can cut to fit the exhaust line: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Filtrete-20-in-x-30-in-x-1-in-Cut-to-Fit-Adjustable-Air-Filter/5005517111
It also works when you need to replace the filter in the cooling tray.
Is your extractor fan inline or a hood? I roast under a hood and noticed a little was accumulating. I bought an inline fan but haven’t fabricated anything yet, but trying to make sure I wasn’t getting things too dirty in the meantime. Thanks.
@michaelaarchibeque.o not sure if that was directed at the OP or me, but my fan is inline in a 4" duct setup, with the intake air-gapped from the bullet. I tried using the 3D printed adapter and could never get it to remove all the smoke without also pulling too much heat from the roaster.
I roast under an exhaust hood (range hood) and what I did is put a MERV filter (ones use for HVAC) before the blower. There was enough space behind the baffle grease filter for me to place the MERV filter. That seems to have protected my exhaust hood blower so far as I can see the crud captured by the filter.
EDIT: this is what I use as it fits behind my exhaust hood baffles: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Filtrete-2-Pack-1085-MPR-Micro-Allergen-Extra-Common-14-in-x-25-in-x-1-in-Actual-13-7-in-x-24-7-in-x-0-8125-in-Electrostatic-Pleated-Air-Filter/3123825
Thank you. I’m just trying to get my plan together before I start breaking things lol.
