Roasting a Kenya Peaberry for a friend of mine and something can’t be right
how can there only be 7.7% weight loss???
Charge weight: 775g
Finish weight: 715g
Total Roast Time:10:23
IBTS @ End of Roast: 209.1*
Beans look great, FC was around 8:30 and development went seemingly normal. Any ideas?
The only possibility is that you forgot to hit tare on your scales at some point, or some other oversight regarding scales. Anything else is out of the question.
That’s what I figured but I roasted 5 batches (this one was the only Kenya) all at the same weight and all the weigh loss was on point except for that one and was super confused.
Thanks for the reply!
No worries. It happened to me a couple of times, but with green beans. I do have some roasts where I started hot, but then realized I was going too fast. It was just that there were less beans in than I thought. And yes, it did happen when I was doing multiple batches with all the others having appropriate weight.
Hey!
This doesn’t seem too out of the ordinary for me… 10:23 is pretty short for a roast of that size. I’ve roasted many 800g batches and aim for a 710g weight out. It could be the peaberry is a more dense bean, and despite first crack happening at 8:30, it simply didn’t develop as much. Or it could have been a bean with a higher moisture content which would affect its weight out as it would need more energy to roast.
Was any conclusion reached over the past week?
How was the tasting?
Hello Josh,
It depends mostly on the moistures inside the green beans themselves. I guess the beans has low moistures percentage leaded to low loss of weight.
