SCA in Houston

Hello Everyone.

I will be heading to the SCA convention in Houston (just the exhibition floor) this Saturday.

Will anyone else be there? It might be fun to catch up.

I’ll DM you my phone number if you are planning on making it.

Hate to reply to my own post, but I had a great time at SCA.

The highlight was meeting Johan and Jacob, and learning about the latest versions of the Bullet. It looks fantastic.

The booth was crowded every time I stopped by, but they were both generous with their time.

Now I’ll have to figure out how to scrape up the cash to get a new machine! (Retirement is hard)

Thanks, guys.

Better late than never! I was at the expo as well and really enjoyed seeing the innovation. I have the original R1 that is still going strong but the new versions are quite thoughtful.

Do you mind elaborating, please? I’m new to the Bullet and roasting in general, and I’m curious to understand what a seasoned Bullet user would consider thoughtful additions

Sure! The coolest thing IMO is the new bullets compensate for airflow automatically. I am in the camp of removing my chaff filter entirely and let it blow out the chimney. My ventilation system sucks (nearly) all of this up and it gets expelled with the smoke. There is a fine balance that I have to find whereby I get most of the chaff without sucking the heat from the bullets roasting chamber. You can absolutely see this negative pressure in your probe temps. The new bullet can monitor and adjusts the fan speed to compensate for these external forces.

Secondly, the new faceplate is magnetically connected and uses pins as the electrical contacts. This means you can pop it off in a split second for routine cleanings and maint. The original bullet requires several screws and disconnecting a ribbon cable to remove the plate. TBH, I didn’t find this to be onerous until I saw how much more convenient the new design is.

That’s really insightful—thank you for breaking it down! I wouldn’t have thought about how ventilation could affect probe temps and airflow compensation. And the magnetic faceplate sounds like a huge quality-of-life upgrade. Can’t wait to get more hands-on with my R1 V2

I spent a great deal of time at the booth at SCA Expo. The product design updates to the R2 and R2 Pro are next level good! The R1 is still very much loved and supported. The one thing I will say is the team is very passionate and dedicated to making the best roasting experience for everyone and they are genuinely great people as well.

Is there anything I can swap out or upgrade on the R1 V2 to get some of the features from the R2 or R2 Pro? Induction heating element and motherboard perhaps?! /s

An upgrade option is going to be available at some point but honestly, it’s better to buy an R2 and sell your R1. The R2 is next level with the flow sense control and other changes. In talking with Steffen, that upgrade option is going to require you to send the R1 to Aillio. It’s not something you’ll be able to do yourself.
