My ancient R1 does not have very much forward force on the drum. If I push it back, it stays back… at least when cold. It seems to stay in place when hot; I haven’t had the courage to push it back while its spinning.
I believe there’s a compression spring at the back of the drum (seen in this post). Does it get old and weak and need replacing?
Hi @dsjstc.Xfjs,
We’ve rarely found a Drum Spring needing a replacement. If the Drum stays back when being pressed, it usually doesn’t reflect an issue unless the Drum is making unusual noises.
Best regards,
Kevin
Thanks Kevin. I’ve got no noise, just occasional wedge beans resulting in excessive loss down the chaff slot, so I was wondering if that might be a contributing factor. Thanks for the reassurance!
Hi @dsjstc.Xfjs ,
If beans are falling out of the Drum during roasting, then you might be having a clearance issue. In that case, it’s worth taking a look at the Drum Spring.
Here’s the Drum replacement guide:
You can follow this guide to access the Drum Spring, but you should mainly check if a thick Shim is still installed at the back of the Drum.
Please also check if the clearance between the Drum and the Front Plate is around 1mm:
If you’re not sure what to look for, you can contact your reseller for further assistance.
Best regards,
Kevin
